Cinerama and Scales

In "This is Cinerama," as well as what we've discussed in class, I can't quite find the name of the person, but he said that he has flown over Manhattan many times and he has never seen it like this. ( "this" being Cinerama view.) I found this to be very interesting because it implies that the Cinerama view, the artificial view, was superior to the actual view of Manhattan from a plane. I cannot imagine how beautiful "This is Cinerama" must have been to make something artificial feel more real than reality itself. My only question is if the man truly thought this way, or did the thrill of the moment embellish his experience? As someone stated in class the only thing remotely close to Cinerama in our time that isn't Cinerama itself would be the experience of an IMAX theater. I feel that Cinerama is more of a one time experience kind of thing like IMAX. The first time experience is very overwhelming only because you've never seen it before. I feel that the feeling will quickly die off.

In the readings about scales, which also was in today's lecture, the idea of something we view as big is very miniscule when juxtaposed to something as large as a galaxy. And on the opposite end of the spectrum, when the professor stated her idea of something incredibly small such as an atom, which can create such a large explosion, it really made me think about how contradictory the things we see can be. But I would also argue that the atom idea is a little misleading. When we think of atoms creating huge explosions through nuclear missiles, it isn't the work of one atom, but a collection of atoms.

  1. I thought that the whole lecture about scales was very interesting and thought provoking in that you get a sense of how small and insignificant we are compared to our ever expanding universe. This really make you think, are we, as humans, the only forms of intelligent life out there? If not, is there a possibility that someday we will make contact with these other lifeforms? This topic gets me really excited about our future and what it has in store for us.
