GIS and the Google Earth

Before I read this week's reading. I did not realize that the Geographic Information System(GIS) has such a big influence. GIS not only helps the development of subjects like geography, geology, meteorology, oceanography and hydrology, but also enhance our sense of nature. In the article "The Web-wide World", the scientists used GIS softwares and the Google Earth to track walruses movements. Before the appearance of GIS and Google Earth, this kind of activity could be very difficult and time-consuming. The development of GIS technology makes the track much more easier. In addition, GIS and Google Earth are also significant in our daily lives. The weather forecast and forest fire prevention are heavily rely on the GIS. The invention of GIS did make our life better and easier.

    1. While the GIS does improve our quality of life, I would argue that these types of technological advancement further pries itself into our personal lives, and we are losing our sense of privacy. Also, I had a thought in class that I couldn't quite remember until now. How we used to have things was borders were determined by negotiations, which then was input into a map. Now that we have Google Earth, I recall the professor talking about how two countries were arguing over borders they saw on Google Earth. I found that to be interesting as the tide seemed to have turn as our society is depending on technology to the point where the creator is learning from the creation.
