Completely Impressed

I found this week’s readings to be really interesting. I found “Cinerama” incredible…not the passage but the concept of it! It reminded me a lot of IMAX, a current form of breathtaking cinematography. The innovation of these inventors at the time really pushed the boundaries of how we see movies. How we take in movies. Also how we appreciate movies. The challenge of having three screens playing one movie filmed by eleven cameras! These days, directors and producers rely on only a few cameras, shooting from different angles.

I found the second reading, “ Enclosed by Images: The Eames’ Multimedia Architecture” to be another interesting concept. When we look at images or watch movies, we expect to be impressed. However, we don’t want to be “overloaded” with information. There is a science behind this and I believe that the movie industry is still figuring it out. I also thought I would add that I am more impressed with the idea of Cinerama than I am with a three dimensional movie. I don’t know why that is, but I am. Maybe I just take 3-D for granted!

  1. I totally agree with Celine on the point of view of cinerama. The innovation and developments of the curved screen and cinerama were really remarkable during the 1950s. People were astonished by the unprecedented experience. Like the IMAX first showed up in the movie theater, people were crazy about the amazing feeling it brought. In my opinion, the inventors of the cinerama not only push the limit of the demonstration of the movie, but also brought a more magnificent picture of American landscape since the landscape became a significant character in the movie with cinerama.

  2. I never realized or thought about how imax can be compared to "Cinerama", I find it a very interesting relation. The movie industry reminds me a lot of the development and advancement of maps. From no sound and color to now being three dimensional it truly is amazing how far we have come, just like maps. From making maps on animal skin to now creating masterpieces on the computer, the human mind continues to expand the boundaries.

  3. I also agree with Celine in that the inventors of cinerama really had to think outside of the box to give the viewers the experience of a lifetime, which they successfully achieved. I feel that the Imax theaters today and all other theaters are also trying to push the boundaries of a movie experience with 3-D technology and with gourmet meals being served in lavish, reclining comfort chairs.
